Fishing at Pelican Lake and Horseshoe Lake

Fishing is open all year. Both lakes are stocked every Thursday: trout from November through spring, catfish from May to September. On stocking day the lake being stocked closes and the other one stays open. In 2026 the park ran weekly 605-pound catfish stockings from May 21 to August 27.

You need two things to fish here:

  • A park fishing permit: $15 for adults, $5 for kids 4 to 14, $20 for everyone on holidays. A $125 annual pass covers 12 visits.
  • A California fishing license if you are 16 or older. The park permit is still required on the state's free fishing days.

Why it's called the Narrows

The Mojave River squeezes through a rocky gap here, and the railroad crossed it at this spot more than a century ago. The photo below shows the Santa Fe bridge over the river at the Narrows around 1905.

Tips

  • Go before 10 a.m. from June to September. July highs in Victorville average 97.5°F.
  • Thursday is stocking day. If you want to fish the freshly stocked lake, come Friday.
  • Weekend entry costs $5 more than a weekday. If you'll visit more than eight times a year, the $80 annual pass pays for itself.
